Why Scientists Lie

In a recent post (See https://scienceandculture.com/2025/08/why-scientists-lie/ -15th August 2025) in ‘Science & Culture Today’ the argument is made that scientists tend to be the sort of people who want “credit and recognition,” not wealth and that this motivation is not always helpful and: ‘Unfortunately, the very same force can push people over ethical cliffs. To win the accolades, one must be first; speed matters….’.

Coupled with a system and approach that does not reward replication, despite it’s being an absolutely vital step in the scientific method of the physical sciences, and a seriously flawed ‘peer-review’ approach, we have a reality where: ‘persuasion becomes more important than precision.”- https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/how-do-you-know/202106/philosopher-asks-why-do-scientists-lie

For those interested in diving deeper into this unfortunate truth, books like Thomas Kuhn’s The Structure of Scientific Revolutions’; the 1982 seminal work ‘Betrayers of the Truth: Fraud and Deceit in the Halls of Science’ by William Broad & Nicholas Wade, as well as the more recent work ‘Fake Science’ by Austin Ruse, paint a disturbing picture that those interested in developing their critical thinking skills would do well to study and review.

I have written on these issues and the vital role of a good education system in the past as well.
